Syntax
Ibsen uses the long syntax of the majority of Nora’s lines to contrasts the other characters. Nora’s lines tend to sound rambling due to the fact that she typically contributes both sides of an argument, thus contradicting herself. This separates Nora from the other characters, making her the protagonist and driving force of the dramatic experience.
Imagery
“The same room. In the corner, beside the piano, stands the Christmas-tree, stripped, and with the candles burnt out. Nora’s outdoor things lie on the sofa.” (Ibsen 18)
The setting of the entire play is in this one room. This quote creates the image of a sad room, without light and festive nature. This is ironic because this takes place on Christmas. This also furthers the image of an actual doll house, because of the lack of home like words which would suggest comfort.
Diction
“I almost felt as if I was a man” (Ibsen 9)
This line, said by Nora proves the presence of a dominant/ submissive relationship among men and women in society. At this time in the play, Nora was lying about how she got money, so this could have been a stab at the men in society, specifically, her husband.
